Fortress Around Your Heart (Sting)

about

Influential for me personally - this came out in my very early 20s. Sting and The Police were a blitzkrieg on pop right when punk made major headway into pop culture - but Sting could write amazing and very intellectual songs within such an angry movement. When Sting went solo, and notable jazz musicians Omar Hakim, Darryl Jones, Kenny Kirkland and Branford Marsalis joined him - that was an amazing band and Sting was able to hit the territory he couldn't with Stewart and Andy.

This song it seemed to me was an education in modes - and Sting's voice traversed the key changes expertly. Its no simple pop song - I've had to learn and relearn how to sing to be able to do this song both in the past and today. Lyrically this is a masterpiece of imagery and regret.

lyrics

Under the ruins of a walled city
Crumbling towers in beams of yellow light
No flags of truce, no cries of pity
The siege guns had been pounding through the night
It took a day to build the city
We walked through it's streets in the afternoon
As I returned across the fields I'd known
I recognised the walls that I once made
I had to stop in my tracks for fear
Of walking on the mines I'd laid

And if I've built this fortress around your heart
Encircled you in trenches and barbed wire
Then let me build a bridge
For I cannot fill the chasm
And let me set the battlements on fire
